A Beginning Approach to Doubling in Jazz Clinic
by Monica Shriver and Mike Crotty
Sunday August 19, 2012 3-5 PM $15 ($10 for students)
The Nash Summer Jazz Clinic Series
110 E. Roosevelt, Downtown Phoenix
Open to doublers and future doublers of all ages and skill levels, Monica Shriver and Mike Crotty will discuss and demonstrate a systematic approach to achieving and maintaining a high level of competency on more than one instrument. The “gear shifts”, both mentally and physically, which are necessary in order to quickly make a smooth transition from one instrument to another, will be clearly explained. Shriver and Crotty will perform musical pieces that represent the challenges faced by doublers in a jazz ensemble.
This clinic is directed at anyone wishing to play more than one instrument, and not just woodwind doublers. Mike Crotty will discuss both how to overcome obstacles for the performer who plays brass and woodwind instruments, and how to use that knowledge to increase playing opportunities.
Bring your horns (and doubles!) and participate in some doubling practice over a simple tune and optional improvisation.

UPDATE! The Doublers Collective Fundraising Event at Winfield’s was incredible. What a fabulous audience! Thanks to everyone who battled the intense heat to be there! Together we raised $498 for our commission from Alan Baylock. If you weren’t able to make it, you missed a great night, but there is still time donate and help us make this commission happen.
Welcome to the Doublers Collective Commissioning Project!
Our goal is to raise $1500 by Aug. 14th to commission a new piece for Doublers Collective to perform. The composer who will write the piece is one of our favorite writers, Alan Baylock, the Chief Arranger for the Airmen of Note. www.alanbaylock.com

I saw you at Sacred Grounds last week. Being a long time music lover, I thought the night would be intriguing based on the pre-event flyer. Needless to say it was out of this world. You folks are to be commended for a very exciting future.
